Low carb, keto dog food: why your dog deserves better than kibble.

Low-carb, keto dog food: why your dog deserves better

The dog food market has been dominated by high-carb kibble for over 80 years. But that's finally changing — because real low carb, ketogenic dog food now exists for dogs of all breeds and life stages.

Here's what you need to know.

Dogs have no nutritional need for carbohydrates

This surprises a lot of pet parents. But it's true — and it raises an obvious question: why is most dog food so high in carbs?

The answer is simple. Carbs are cheap, easy to manufacture with, and most brands don't have to disclose carb content on the label. In fact, Visionary Pet is the only brand that lists carb content clearly on the bag. Other brands make misleading claims like "grain-free" while still loading recipes with sweet potatoes, peas, and corn.

What the science says

In 2014, members of our team helped open KetoPet Sanctuary — rescuing dogs with late-stage cancer and investigating the benefits of a ketogenic diet. What they found was striking:

  • Dogs on a standard high-carb diet had an average blood sugar over 50% higher than dogs on a keto diet
  • Dogs eating keto food had measurable blood ketone levels above 0.3 mMol — compared to essentially zero for dogs on a high-carb diet

The conclusion: all dogs — not just those with cancer — should be powered by fat and protein, not carbs.

What to look for in a keto dog food

Not all "low carb" claims are equal. Here's what actually matters:

Very low carbohydrates. Look for less than 1g net carbs per cup. Most dry foods contain over 30% carbohydrates by calories — Visionary Pet contains less than 1%.

Real animal meat protein. Avoid foods that pad protein content with pea or soy protein. These are deficient in key amino acids like taurine, which can cause serious health problems over time. Every Visionary recipe uses only animal meat protein.

The right fat-to-protein ratio. A true keto diet runs roughly 60% fat and 40% protein as a percentage of total calories. This maintains ketosis while supporting lean muscle.

The result

It took our team over two years to create a dry keto dog food that actually works — less than 1g net carbs per cup, real meat protein, validated ketogenic in hundreds of dogs. The first real innovation in dog food in over 80 years.

Your dog deserves to be powered by fat and protein. Not cheap carbs.
